The JGMS Buc Stop, our student store, is located in the John Glenn Middle School cafeteria and is now open during all grade level lunches. This store, which is entirely run by our middle school student volunteers, sells items for student use such as pencils, erasers, reusable water bottles, student planners and even some limited apparel items. We do not sell food items as we had a hand-shake 'non-compete' agreement with the cafeteria staff.
All non-apparel items are sold in the store with a same day cash transaction. However all clothing items, such as T-shirts, sweatpants and sweatshirts, need to be special ordered. To order these apparel items, students can take home the linked 'Fall 2014 apparel order form'. Hard copies of the apparel order form are also available at the JGMS Buc Stop. The JGMS Buc Stop does have a few apparel example items for students to try on for size when making decisions when purchasing clothing.
The JGMS Buc Stop has set prices which are displayed inside and outside of the store. Additionally, student volunteers working in the store set the price points to sell all items and will even run sales from time to time, such as buy one get one free pencils.
Students currently working in the school store were require to first fill out an application and describe how they are dependable, trustworthy and helpful to others. The JGMS Buc Stop student volunteers interact with customers while practicing consumer mathematics and customer service communication skills. The job responsibilities for JGMS Buc Stop volunteers are to unlock the store, open the roll top, interact with customers, collect money and provide change. Students also keep very accurate records of all transactions and are responsible for keeping all store inventories neat, presentable and orderly.
These volunteers use a paper and pencil sales ledger to track all items sold, including the unit price, quantity and total price. They also actively solicit feedback from customers and inquire about other items that students might want to purchase in the store. The JGMS Buc Stop currently has over 20 student entrepreneurial volunteers working in the 6th, 7th and 8th grade.
All profits from the JGMS Buc Stop directly support student scholarships to participate in our Nature's Classroom Trip, Sunday River Ski Trip, and Washington D.C. Trip.
