Once collected, all coats are professionally cleaned by Anton’s then distributed by social service agencies to those in need within the local community, which includes organizations such as Massachusetts Community Action Programs (MASSCAP), Salvation Army, Middlesex Human Service Agency, BU Medical Center Outreach Van Project, Wish Project, Community Giving Tree, Mental Health Association of Greater Lowell, Strafford County Community Action, Catholic Charities, to name just a few.
Our 6th grade guidance counselor, Ms. McDermott, who is also the student council faculty advisor said that the idea to participate in the Coats for Kids program was student generated. Ms. McDermott shared, "The John Glenn Middle School Student Council was inspired by the advisory theme of 'harvesting community' and our student leaders really liked the idea of pulling together our resources to help others in need". The JGMS Student Council meets every Wednesday morning at 7:10 am and new students are always welcome.
